If anyone utters with his lips a rash oath to do evil or to do good, any sort of rash oath that people swear, and it is hidden from him, when he comes to know it, and he realizes his guilt in any of these; when he realizes his guilt in any of these and confesses the sin he has committed, he shall bring to the Lord as his compensation for the sin that he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin. – Lev 5:4-6
Reading Leviticus after Judges is a huge change of pace. Men doing whatever they want and deciding on all kinds of wicked ways vs. God’s good law. What happened to Jephthah’s daughter is a huge example. He swore to Yahweh that he would offer the first thing that came out of his house as a burnt offering of Yahweh would give him victory. Well, he won but his only child came out first to greet him. Soon after we’re told that he “did with her according to his vow that he had made.” For a while I thought, surely he sacrificed a goat in her place and she was dedicated to God as a priestess or something, but it seems that’s not what happened. But God had given such a solution to Israel in his law! How wonderful and wise is our Lord, how foolish are we when we go our own way.
