What is Disney teaching us?

We recently rewatched the fox Disney Robin Hood because we talked about the word “alms” in language lessons and that led to the phrase “alms, alms for the poor” and on to Robin Hood. During that and at the end I was musing on the things it teaches; today we were playing some music from various Disney films and I mused some more. As these were the films I grew up with because they were “safe” I thought I’d reflect on what things I feel they are saying.

In Robin Hood (1973) I found a lot that was commendable. Growing up I always loved the thanks of Robin Hood, but as an adult find the tale too easy to twist justify to the government taking from the rich to feed the poor. However, the movie does a good job of showing the evil of a corrupt government that takes, takes, takes. I also like that the clergy stand up to the governmental corruption and even attacks the sheriff. Finally, the assumption the Robin Hood and Maid Marian will marry and have lots of kids is refreshing.

On the other hand, The Little Mermaid is about a headstrong teenager who gets her way over her father’s wisdom in a way that very nearly ruins her entire family. Aladdin is successful because he found a lamp, got rich quick, and lied about everything. He can show the princess the world and no one can tell them no as their feelings decide. Sounds like the kinda guy you chase off with your shotgun if he comes to see your daughter. The Lion King and Pocahontas have some pretty bad earth spirituality junk.

Anyway, that’s just a little bit of the junk I can remember as sparked by some songs. It’s not like these films are completely bad or that I’ve found myself imbibing those views (that I’m aware of), it’s just something to ponder: what are kids movies teaching?
